Peter was born Feb. 2, 1930 in St. Paul, Minn., to Helen and Thomas Gibbons, as the seventh son, followed in birth by two sisters. He graduated from Cretin High School and completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Peter received his Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. He served two years of military service as an optometrist at William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas. Peter then opened his optometric practice in Grand Rapids and continued his practice for 36 years.

He married Mary Jo Gagnon in 1960 and raised a family of two sons and two daughters on Bass Lake north of Cohasset. Since childhood, Peter spent time every summer at Osakis, Minn., with the extended Gibbons clan. He enjoyed many years of bass fishing and hunting with his family and friends. Peter loved watching wildlife, especially the deer and loons on Bass  Lake. link
